HAGERSTOWN, Md. - Fire officials say an 86-year-old man has been injured in a house fire in Hagerstown.

Delbert Summerville was listed in critical condition at Meritus Medical Center after Tuesday's fire.

Firefighters found Summerville in cardiac arrest near a basement door. He suffered from smoke inhalation and first- and second-degree burns.

Officials say Summerville and his wife saw smoke coming from the basement and he tried to find the cause of the fire. His wife went to a neighbor's house to call 911.

Authorities say about half of the basement and half of the first floor of the house were destroyed. Damage was estimated at $40,000.

Officials say the fire started in a workshop area of the basement.
