LISBON, Maine - Three Maine families escaped uninjured after an early morning fire swept part of a Lisbon apartment building.

Lisbon Fire Chief Sean Galipeau says firefighters managed to contain the fire to a single, second floor apartment, but the rest of the building suffered smoke and water damage.

The fire was reported about 2 a.m. Wednesday.

Second floor resident Lowell Saindon lived in the apartment with his girlfriend and 2-year-old daughter. He says he had to run through flames to reach the front door.

He tells the Sun Journal newspaper he woke up when people outside were throwing things at his window.

No word on what caused the fire.
