The former Creative Playthings plant near Herndon in Northumberland County is in ruins.

The old plant caught fire just after 8 p.m. Tuesday and it took some time to get it under control.

Crews were still on the scene at noon Wednesday hosing down hot spots.

The plant used to make wooden swing sets and commercial playgrounds. Now the plant, known as S & L Spindles, is a lumber storage warehouse.

Investigators said a worker was using a blow torch to cut some metal when the fire started. It took more than one million gallons of water and firefighters from five counties to fight the blaze.

There are no reports of injuries.

Route 147 was closed for hours after the fire. It reopened early Wednesday morning.
