Depends where you are looking. Here in WI, there are several depts that host an intern program, some are live in, some are shift. The shift internships tend to be with full time departments, the intern is assigned a shift and goes to the station after school on their shift day. This means they also have to live elsewhere when not on shift.

Some depts host a live in internship and tend to be volly or combination. The intern is a member of the dept, has the certs necessary to respond. They have a shift or duty day at the station, but when not on duty they have a place to live. Each dept is different in how interns respond, what they are allowed to do and duties differ. For the most part though one has to be enrolled in a fire protection or paramedic program, not just a volly who is attending school for a different degree and wants to save money on living expenses or doesn't want to live in a dorm. The intern applies for the position, is interviewed, backgrounded and so forth and if lucky get a "job offer". The majority of the programs are a 2 year program in conjunction with the associate degree.
