WIMAUMA, Fla. - A Wimauma home is a total loss after a two-alarm fire late Sunday night. Investigators say a lightning strike may have sparked the blaze at 3410 Lake Cortona Way.
Witnesses said they saw smoke and fire coming from the home shortly after a storm passed around 9:45 p.m.
Firefighters responded and the blaze went to two alarms. There were no fire hydrants nearby and water had to be brought in to fight the fire.
The home is a total loss but there is no damage estimate yet.
There were initial reports that firefighting efforts were hampered due to live ammunition inside the residence, but that has not been confirmed.
The family who lives in the home was out of town at the time of the fire. Sheriff's officials have been in contact with them.
Investigators are still working to determine the exact cause of the blaze.
