MAYSVILLE, Ky. - Fire has caused heavy damage to a historic building in downtown Maysville, where the city had worked for three years to renovate.
One firefighter was injured when the roof of the Cox Building collapsed Tuesday night. The Ledger Independent reported he may have suffered a shoulder injury.
The structure was built in 1886. The newspaper said the city purchased it for $200,000 in December 2006 and immediately began improvements. Renovations drew $2.5 million in federal funding.
The fire started around 4 p.m. EST.
A nearby resident, Linda Ford, told the newspaper she was "sick" over the building, which she called "the heart of downtown."
Maysville City Manager Ray Young also said the fire and thoughts of losing the building sickened him.
