Kentucky Family Escapes Fire; Crews Deal With Frozen Hydrants

DAYTON, Ky. - A fire that destroyed a northern Kentucky house quickly spread to one next door as a father carried his two youngest children to safety just in time.

The fire began about 9 a.m. Wednesday in Dayton, reported The Kentucky Enquirer, and it took five fire departments more than two hours to contain it.

Jeff Haire said his daughters, 4-year-old Paige and 2-year-old Kayden, were asleep in an upstairs bedroom when the father of his girlfriend saw smoke in the kitchen.

A side door jammed and he had to break out a window to get the children outside, then broke down the door to get the older man out as the smoke thickened.

Haire's girlfriend Jessica Jones said the couple's four other children were at school.
