LANSING, Kan.
The 5-year-old daughter of a Leavenworth firefighter has died in a fire that authorities say began when the girl was playing with a candle under her bed.
Officials say Mark Jacobson was the first to smell smoke Sunday night coming from his daughter's room in their home in nearby Lansing. The firefighter tried to put out the blaze, but was stopped by heat and flames.
Leavenworth County Fire Chief Rick Huhn says it took only a few minutes to put out the fire, but it took longer to find Brooke Jacobson under her bed.
Jacobson suffered burns on his arms and was taken to the burn center at University of Kansas Hospital.
