KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Two Kansas City firefighters have been hurt while fighting a fire at a vacant apartment building.
Battalion Chief Joe Vitale says both firefighters were taken to the University of Kansas Hospital with burn injuries. One of the firefighters suffered serious burns to his hands, while the other suffered burns to his extremities.
Firefighters arrived at the apartment blaze shortly before 10 a.m. Sunday. They had reached the second floor when they were told to pull back because the fire had progressed too far.
One of the firefighters who was burned was overcome by smoke and had trouble getting out of the building. A second firefighter who helped also was burned.
