KANSAS CITY, Kan. - Fire officials say two young children died in an early morning fire in Kansas City, Kan.

Assistant Fire Chief Craig Duke says a 1-year-old boy and an 2-year-old girl died Wednesday in the fire. One other child and three adults were able to escape without injuries.

Duke says the fire was reported about 3 a.m. after the grandmother of the two victims awoke and smelled smoke. He says the smoldering fire was confined to the toddlers' room, which was filled with smoke.

Duke says police and fire officials attempted to revive the children at the scene, but the children died at a hospital.

Investigators were working to determine the cause of the fire.
