DOWNS, KS - The Hays Daily News is reporting that a Kansas volunteer fire captain has died of a reported heart attack while operating at the scene of a garage fire.
Downs Fire Captain Jim Niles, 59, was working at the scene of a garage fire in Downs on Thursday. Crews had begun operating on the working fire when Niles was found unresponsive.
Niles, an 18-year member of The Downs Volunteer Fire Department, was taken to Osborne County Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
anyone doing this job over the age of 50 is taking a huge risk not having a cardiac analysis including both a body imaging scan of the coronary / carotid arteries, stress EKG and tidal volume assessment annually. you can even do blood work to see if there are certain enzymes that are elevated. if you do this job, you have to make sure everything is in good working order. it's kind of like servicing your car, just your body. take the time to do so to prevent as much as possible another LODD.
my thoughts and prayers go out to the family, friends and fellow firefighters that knew this Fire Captain. May he rest in peace.
