I am a junior firefighter and I want to know what types of thing can we do to train for the real thing....?

sure... there are ton's of things to do but one thing that is often overlooked is your ability to use a radio to quickly and accurately describe what you see and what you are doing...

Drill: get some lego's and put together some sort of off the wall design, using various shaped legos. Make one of these for each group, having four people to a group (engine company minimum staffing). This exercise requires two groups to talk to one another over the radio and describe what it is that they are seeing (the put together lego unit) and the other, following their descriptive terminology attempts to re-create what is being described to them. This is done for time with groups competing against one another. When they think they are done, one person takes the finished product to the instructor / proctor to see if they have accurately recreated the other groups lego design. Does this make sense to you? It's all about communicating which is one of the most important things we can learn and do well.
