MOUNT CLEMENS, Mich. (AP) -- A judge has ruled that a 68-year-old Michigan woman facing possible jail time after painting over a fire hydrant near her home that had been decorated by children is in the clear.
The hydrant in the Detroit suburb of Mount Clemens had been painted white with black spots in August by children as part of a citywide art project, and Gloria Haller painted it yellow in September.
Haller argued safety was at stake, and the black-and-white hydrant would be difficult to see in the winter.
Haller was charged with misdemeanors of defacing public property and violating the fire code. The Macomb Daily and The Detroit News report District Judge Sheila Miller dismissed the charges Thursday.
Haller faced up to 90 days in jail and a $500 fine if convicted.

If the city sanctioned the black and white painted hydrant, what were they thinking? How cute just like a Dalmation but hard to see in snow? Probably didn't confer with the FD. Wonder if Ms Haller brought her color concern to the city before she took the issue into her own hands. Art is nice but not at the expense of common sense. TCSS

Come on now, there's not something else in mount clemens to paint besides the fire hydrants. This woman seen it as a public safety problem and solved it. These people should apologize to this woman publicly and maybe even make her in charge of whoever thought it would be a great idea to paint them white with black spots.
I dont know about yalls Dept, but here the FD is in charge of checking flowing and painting the hydrants the appropriate color in regards to the flow. So what would the city have done if the FD painted this hydrant after testing it. Would they have sanctioned the whole dept. Also what was the original color was if black and out of service or was a hydrant that had great pressure. If there had been an incident that little art project could have cost someone there life.
