OMAHA, Neb. - A Douglas County judge says Omaha must hire more firefighters to meet its union contract obligations.

In a ruling issued Tuesday, Judge J. Patrick Mullen of Douglas County District Court said the staffing had fallen below 657 firefighters, the contract minimum.

The judge also said the city didn't have to assign captains to medic units, which the union still disputes.

Whether the city would demote some of its captains could be decided by Friday.

Last week, a federal judge blocked the city from increasing health insurance premiums for roughly 1,100 city retirees, including former firefighters, and set a July 26 trial date on the issue.
