FRESNO, Calif. - A Federal judge has affirmed a nearly $2.5 million award given to a woman who sued the Fresno Fire Department for gender discrimination.
U.S. District Court Judge Oliver W. Wagner has also denied the city of Fresno's request for a new trial and its argument that the evidence did not support the jury's verdict.
Michele Maher sued the fire department in 2008. She claimed she was forced out of the training academy by being set up to fail certain tasks, unfairly graded on an exam and repeatedly asked personal questions.
A jury ruled that Maher, a single mother and former professional mixed-martial arts fighter, was entitled to $2.46 million in damages and attorneys' fees that could top $1 million.

So according to the news article she resigned from the fire academy. She was told that her quiz grades were sub-par and she needed to score an 80% on the midterm test, she scored a 78%. So should they lower the test score standards so people can pass them easier? I think not. We need good firefighters, not below standard firefighters. I'm all in favor of equal rights, as long as the person can mentally and physically do the job. I don't care what sex, race, sexual orientation you are, as long as you can do the same job as everyone else, with the same standards as everyone else. I saw this a lot when i was in the military. Women made the same money, got the same chances to advance, but were held to a lower physical standard. I don't think that is right. If you want to be held as an equal, be equal. Don't make people lower the standards to make you equal. Ok i'm going to step down from my soap box now.
