Jersey City firefighters talked a frightened woman out of jumping from a third-floor window last night as a fire roared on the second floor, officials said.
Responding to a call at 7:53 p.m., firefighters found the woman readying to jump out the top floor window at 662 Bergen Ave., said Fire Director Armando Roman.
"Firefighters talked her out of it and went into the building and got her out," Roman said. "She was very panicked and could have gotten seriously hurt."
The one-alarm blaze, which firefighters believe started in the rear of the second floor, was declared under control at 8:48 p.m., Roman said.
Residents on the second floor were displaced, but others were able to return to their units, Roman said.
Roman said the city plans to investigate the building to determine if it has illegally subdivided apartments.
