CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - A Cedar Rapids mail carrier has been honored for putting out a fire in an apartment building on her route.
Angie Martin was presented a certificate by Cedar Rapids Fire Chief Stephen Reid Monday. Reid says Martin prevented the fire from spreading and calls her actions "monumental."
The Gazette says the 35-year-old Martin was delivering mail Nov. 10 when she saw people standing outside the building. When she looked inside, Martin saw flames shooting up from a sink. She went into the apartment and used a fire extinguisher to douse the flames. Then she finished her route.
Martin has also been nominated for the U.S. Postmaster General's award for bravery.
She says she feels protective of her people on her route, even if she doesn't really know them.
