SHREVEPORT, La. (AP) -- A doctor says a battalion fire chief who broke his neck in a fall just after a Carnival parade is making progress.

Dr. Ravish Patwardhan of Willis-Knighton Pierremont hospital says Tommy Adams injured his head and broke his neck when he fell from a ladder truck Feb. 21.

But he says MRIs don't show any evidence of brain injury. And he says electrodes prompted some leg movement, so there's a 40 percent chance Adams may walk again.

Doctors replaced the most-damaged disk with an artificial one, and fused others together with a metal plate and screws.

And he now communicates _ blinking twice to answer "yes".

Fire Chief Brian Crawford says Adams reached down from the ladder to pick up a box, lost his balance, and fell eight to nine feet, landing on his neck and head.
