Indianapolis Metropolitan Police say the man, Richard Jones, was involved in fight with his girlfriend when he ran to the couple’s townhome at the Avon Lake Apartments in the 6700 block of Greenshire Road. Police say they tried to speak with Jones through the door of the apartment when they heard shotgun blasts.

Officers immediately sought cover and called tor the SWAT team to respond to the situation. While waiting for SWAT, police on the scene noticed a fire had been set in an upstairs bedroom.

While firefighters were on their way to the scene, officers saw an injured Jones running out of the townhouse and into a retention pond. He went underwater and never resurfaced.
Dive teams recovered his body a short time later.

Police say Jones’ death, at this point, appears to be an accident or suicide.
