You are the incident commander for an apartment fire at 0859 hours in your first-due area.
What would be the initial assignment and expected staffing?
What type of initial size-up report would you expect from the first-arriving officer?
Would mutual aid be automatic based on a report of fire showing or would you have to specifically request it?
As the incident commander do you work from the front seat of your vehicle? The back? Near Side Alpha of the fire building at a command post?
Who would be responsible for your Side Charlie or rear report?
What assignments are you giving to incoming companies – or, will they work off of SOPs?
You request a second-alarm – how many companies do you expect and what amount of staffing?
What are you expecting to hear from companies inside as far as a progress report?

A box assignment for us would be 4 engine companies, two ladder companies, a heavy duty rescue squad and medic unions. A second alarm would double that assignment. We just has a damn 5 alarm fire two weeks ago."

establish a water supply and call for a 2nd alarm. Meanwhile... I would split my crew, throwing ladders for rescue while myself and a firefighter lay a leader into the courtyard to maximize lay distance, protect egress, and have attack lines at the ready. Focus on rescue until the 2nd and 3rd due arrive lest rescue is complete before their arrival.
