Your view as the IC arriving first at this fire

Video below is from David Decker of a house fire in Newark, Ohio.  Consider the following for your drill discussion using your department:

Fire is reported 0613 hours. What will be the initial assignment and staffing?

You arrive first as a chief officer, what will be your size-up report and additional information?

Based on (limited in video) conditions seen, what are your next steps?

What will come to your scene on an additional alarm?  What will the staffing levels be?

What assignments or additional information will you pass along to the incoming companies on any additional alarms?

Ensure 3 Engines & 2 Truck Cos Plus R.I.T./F.A.S.T. Unit Each maned by an officer & 4 Firefighters to be effective. Request 2nd Alarm if any exposures become involved. Any and all units responding must be properly manned Officer & 4 Firefighters. I wonder why the Chief and the older Firefighter are not in full fire gear. The Chief walked up with no bunker pants or boots on, before he knew everyone was out of the building. The older firefighter was not in full fire gear, what would have happened to him if an LPG Bottle or something exploded, or part of the building collapsed. Good intent does not keep you safe. Job 1 here is exposure protection after the life hazard has been addressed. Size up should have given occupied 1&1/2 story frame Dwelling, all occupants reported out, size up 20 ft. X 35 ft.( or so) fire 1st floor & through the roof & Exposures #1 House #2. Driveway. #3. Garage #4. What ever it is (Or A,B,C,D,). Next step protect the most severe exposure with large handline or deck gun.  Notify any 1st or 2nd alarm incoming units of location & type of water source, that it is an exterior Attack, Confirm that the building is in fact unoccupied at this time. Order incoming units to be prepared for Exposure Protection duties.  Captain Bob Rainey E-26 FDNY Retired.
