Ilinois Firefighters Cut Through Roof to Reach Hoarder

SKOKIE, Ill. - Firefighters in the Chicago suburb of Skokie say they had to cut a hole in the roof of a house in order to extract the body of a 79-year-old woman who was trapped inside her garbage-filled home.

The Cook County Medical Examiner's office said Tuesday that 79-year-old Marie Davis died of heart disease.

Neighbors said Davis' mentally disabled daughter, who also lived in the home, was seen crying outside the home Monday evening.

Police could not get into the house because of the volume of trash inside.

Firefighters broke the front door of the home and crawled through the garbage and found Davis' body resting on debris piled to about a foot from the ceiling. Skokie Deputy Fire Chief Barry Liss said the firefighters realized they could not remove Davis' body without sawing through the roof.
