Hundreds Gather For Second Of Chicago Firefighters' Funerals

CHICAGO - Funeral services are scheduled at a South Side church for Corey Ankum, the second of two Chicago firefighters killed last week when a roof collapsed after a fire in a vacant building.

Although Ankum spent only about one year as a firefighter, hundreds of his colleagues - many who had never met him - gathered for his visitation Wednesday evening at the Apostolic Church of God. Visitors and relatives from as far away as Connecticut and Alabama also attended.

Many of the firefighters took part in a solemn 40-minute procession past Ankum's casket.

Ankum's visitation was to continue Thursday morning, followed by a funeral later in the day.

Fellow firefighter Edward Stringer also died in the Dec. 22 roof collapse. Stringer's funeral was Tuesday.
