Knowing ahead that having paramedic certification gets you on a separate list, I used this to my advantage. I took over 2 tests over a span of six years, getting on some lists and not others. Some of the tests, and this was over 30 years ago, had over 7,500 applicants. Veteran points were a big deal then as it is now, giving veterans an advantage, and rightly so. The secret is taking a lot of tests and learning how to play the game. Going to www.earstress.com is also a necessity for learning how to do well on the oral board. If you are not in great physical shape or don't have a college degree, chances of getting hired go down... a lot...

im only a volunteer but i spent a year training as a rookie before going on a course, ii have been in the service coming up 4 years now an my future plans is to become a paid firefighter, here in New Zealand once we pass a cognitive test an a physical we then move onto  interviews , if we make it throught that we have to train full time for  3 months then will be located to a station, thats the proceedure for paid fire fighting.
