How many departments are you a member of...and why? I am personally a member of 3 different fire companies, and one EMS company. I like to work with different aspects of the fire service, and gather all sorts of views on ho w companies in my area do things. I always get teased about it. Whatever. I just tell 'em what I just said here. You also get to know a lot more people, help the departments that butt heads work together, and stay active.

I am part of 3 departments, 4 if you include the one I go and visit the paid FFs where they let me run. I run at two in a rural area, one has an interstate in its first due, and one in the city. I run at the rural ones because they get a variety of calls, and obviously the one with the interstate gets a lot of auto accidents which means, extrication. I run in the city because they deal with a lot of different things then the rural areas do. I chose to ride at a station with all paid FFs because I get to see how they do things, which will help me in the future. No matter which one I am at I am learning something and I love it!
I do believe in Ny york you can only run with one dept... When leaving a dept you must get a letter from chief stating you are done with that dept... I do run a different ems dept.. I run Oxbow fire ,and Gouverneur Rescue..
I am a member of only 1 department. All of the departments in my area rely on eachother for mutual aid so we run calls for any neighboring departments I would join anyway. We run enough calls as it is. I am a volunteer. I'm too old to be a career ff these days, the closest one is 26 miles away. There is a career dept in the city I work in but they are strictly career, full time. Most of the departments here only accept members who live within their area.
I personaly think that it is great , and take my hat off to everyone that runs with more than department. On the otherhand I also believe that you guys must have more than 24 hours in your day, because between my department, and my fulltime job as a 7pm-7am dispatcher, and my wife there is no way I would be able to do it
I run with 2 fire dept and a EMS dept. I Joined the dept in the county that has the most runs first then I joined my second because they needed more members and it was only 5 min away from my house. I feel it is nice because I have met a lot of different people and I see different views. I have taking a lot of crap about being on 2 fire depts.
