I AM LOOKING TO SEE HOW OTHER DEPARTMENTS RUN THEIR ELECTIONS FOR COMPANY OFFICERS. ALSO WHAT QUALIFICATIONS ARE REQUIRED TO BE ELEIGIBLE TO RUN FOR OFFICER. I AM NOT PARTICULARLY HAPPY WITH THE WAY THAT OURS WENT AND WAS LOOKING FOR ANY INFO OR FEEDBACK THAT YOU ALL HAVE. IT WOULD BE APPRECIATED.

Damn this happens so much they now make helmet rockers that say EX-Chief or Captain. I personally don't give a rats ass that you may have been elected before.... but this easily causes the clicks to follow their favorites when people can't let go that they are no longer an officer.
I'm sure that it adds heaps to an already dysfunctional environment. Not to mention that the EX-Favorite Father's Son is going to be looking over your shoulder, Monday morning quarterbacking every decision and waiting to ride in the white horse at the drop of a hat. Sometimes I wonder how a chief at one department can serve as an Lt or Cap on another department. It must be quite a rollercoaster ride and especially if the scene is going south fast.

You right! This could very well happen, and it probably does elsewhere I'm sure, but our department is fortunate to have a Chief, that strictly looks closely at whom he decides who will be best qualified to be an effective, and responsible officer!

Like I stated, it's not about the good ole boy system, it's about mature qualified person B, and not if he likes person A. Incompetent officers can cost your department everything!
First off with our dept. you must have 4 years active fire fighter to even put your name in to run, you must posses FF1 FF2,ims 100 200 300 700 .ISO.Structural WMD Fast team and level 1 instructor and Company officer as well as truck school and ops..if you meet all that then you petition your name during year which you must maintain 60% or 240 points to do that then if thats met come OCt. nominations are read..second reading in Nov. and votes are done in Dec. swearing in is not till 1st of new year
Only 2 spots we have that are elected are the Chief and Asst. Chief. Line officers are appointed by the top 2 but must still meet criteria established in the bylaws.

Elections are the first week in November. There are no nominations, if you intend to run you must submit a credential packet to the President of the election or an election teller, this step starts 1 October and end midnight 1 week before the election. Elections are held on a secret ballot and the winners take office on the first of December.
The way the fire service is structured in Pennsylvania at this time is very dangerous. Most organizations providing Emergency Response Services are volunteer independent non-profit organizations that have no or very little government oversight. In this situation the individual organizations make up their own rules.

So to answer your question our department has no real qualification requirements for officers. Anyone who can get enough friends or allies to vote for them can take over an organization and or the line officers positions even if they are the least qualified person to handle such an important responsibility. I should mention that I belong to two fire service organizations and the one does require that line officer candidates have completed essentials but that is it for any line office from Lieutenant to Chief.

All you need is someone to nominate you for a position and then get more votes than anyone else that is nominated for that same position.
In the small vol. department that i belong to it seem's to be , as some of you have mentoned , the good old boy type election. As far as i can see in this dept you don't need any qualification's, hell, you don't need to show up at any drill's our call's, Three year's ago, after moving from one end of the fire district to the other we have two houses' ,and living in the district for 21 year's and having FFE,Intro to command ,arson awareness, nims 100, 200, 700, 800, auto extrication and bus extrication and other's , i was elected to 3rd asst. this lasted 2yrs. Aparrently, the good old boy's didn't like that i compleatd the fire report's that were left ucompleated from 2002 and didn't play their way. Long story,but what i hear from different depts. around NY, this common with small vol. dept. . The guy that was voted in as 3rd was the one they voted out and he hasn't been to anything in 3 YEAR'S, so i know what your up against and all you can realy do is the best you can and try not to let any one get hurt at a incident.
