Neighbors said that three young children lived in the house with their uncle and their grandparents.

Houston Fire Department District Chief Tommy Dowdy says firefighters were met by the children's uncle who had a gun as they arrived shortly after 1 a.m. Sunday.

Dowdy says the man indicated firefighters weren't going in fast enough.

Dowdy said there were reports that the man and a news photographer exchanged gunfire. He said no firefighters were injured.

Authorities were searching for the uncle, who left the scene after the two deceased children were found in the house.

how sad! those bars keep out the bad guys and keep out the "good guys". Something needs to be done with the way these are installed so this never happens again. My heart and prayers with the family of the children and the firefighters affected by what they saw.
Having been a police officer and a combat arms officer I am used to being shot at. Other than wearing kevlar or shooting back (probably not acceptable) I don't know what to tell you about the gunfire.

As far as the bars however, when I was working with metro narcotics we carried heavy chain that we would attach to the windows, doors, etc. and have a truck or department wrecker just pull them out with the entire frame. Of course we had already made it impossible for them to flush the dope before attaching the chains as this is not a subtle tactic.

I'm sure someone already thought of this, but this is how we handled it.

My prayers for those children.
That is definitely screwed up.Bad enough the house is on fire and there's children trapped inside but their uncle had to start shooting at people. My God what was wrong with him?I wouldn't be trying to shoot the people trying to save my nieces or nephews lives. As far as the bars go I agree with the former cop in the fact that the uncle was probably selling dope is the reason he had the bars there in the first place. That would also probably explain the fact that he left the scene or maybe he shot his own nieces or nephews and hoped that the fire would cover it up.A lot of factors there on this one.
