HOUSTON — A union official says more than 200 Houston firefighters will begin receiving layoff notices next week.

Jeff Caynon of the Houston Professional Firefighters Association told KTRK-TV that 238 firefighters received calls Thursday ordering them to attend meetings where they will receive 45-day layoff notices.

Union officials say they will continue trying to work something out between the city and firefighters.

The city is facing a budget shortfall, and layoffs have already occurred in other departments.

The city must give municipal employees 45 days' notice of layoffs. A budget must be passed by June 30.

Times are rough, and it's saddening. It's sad to see people still losing their jobs. It's sad that it's becoming increasingly difficult to pay basic expenses and put food on the table.

I hope everything works out. Maybe even a lag pay could be instated; Although I am highly against them, if it's to save jobs I am all for it.

It's only a matter of time before a tragedy occurs that could have be prevented by having these firefighters on duty. The citizens are progressively getting less and less for their taxes these days.
Lets hope that the tragedy isn't a short handed crew that gets caught in a situation that could have been prevented with adequate staffing. Cities always cut into essential services to balance what they spent on "necessary" items. Cities love playing roulette with PD, FD and citizens lives.
