My Cousin is graduating a firefighter one class tonight but she has to take a test before so... while reviewing some quesitons we came across one that has us both baffeled.... please help
the question :
When advancing a hose line up a ladder what is the best and safest method to use?
A) advance an uncharged hose line
B) Advance a charged hose line
C) Never advance a hose line up a ladder
D) Tie the hose line to the ladder
If i could get some serious feed back and help on this i would greatly appreciate it
not all of them are bad answers but i would go with the situation... If I were advancing an uncharged hose line it would probably be that I have a window or balcony to climb through to brace for the discharge or if I had a large obstacle the engine can't get by (the so close but so far factor like an extremely tall fence to a school) and you had to throw a ladder to advance the hose.
a charged hose line is practical for attic openings or skylight attacks, or even a large freaking area like having to advance from the second story to the seat of the fire (school again)
Remember though be smarter than the hose! if your advancing the hose make it practical and do it safe!
a hoseline no matter uncharged or charged can be a chore to carry up the ladder along with your tool and a tic (if you have one), always secure your line to your ladder before charging or after its been charged because you can easily drop the hose and start all over again or even worse fall off the ladder because to pump discharge was too much too handle, same can be said about nozzle pressure and reaction!
the rope hoist isn't advancing hose at all and would be stupid to do if your making an interior attack, that's an overhaul operation, or a ladder truck operation.
advancing a charged hoseline isn't too much of a chore if your company officer or another firefighter is footing the ladder (not standing beneath it holding the ladder) and shoving that hose up the ladder. again it's just situation warrented but if your "Advancing" a hose your best bet is to have it charged to protect you.
