I have read many articles, blogs and stories about the 10th anniversary of 9/11 and have decided to keep this short. Not out of disrespect or laziness, but because I believe that how we remember and honor those 343 and the firefighters who have passed since from working on the “pile” should be shown daily in our actions.

I ask that you honor those brave firefighters everyday by being a real firefighter every day. The following is a list that I have come up with to honor their memory daily.

Have pride in your job and profession.

Treat your citizens the way they expect to be treated.

Master your craft. You must train yourself and those with you.

Plan, expect and prepare for fire.

Be a mentor, coach and a leader. Not in your words but in your actions.

Be in engaged and active in your profession.

Ask yourself everyday, “How am I making a difference?”

Be a Brother. Don’t just say it, BE one. Actions speak louder than words.

Finally, keep all those firefighters and families in your prayers daily. Live your life and career in a manner that would honor all of the brave men that lost their lives that day trying to save others.

I pledge to do these things to remember and honor the Fallen 343 everyday.

God Bless all of our firefighters,
Jason

I sat at home this morning, reflecting on what happened ten years ago. For the first time, I listened to the initial FDNY dispatch tape as the incidents magnitude was very quickly assessed and evaluated by responding Chief officers. Only necessary to the point communications occurred that focused on identifying who was responding, where vehicles should stage and confirmation that the World Trade Center had been intentionally struck by an airplane and to be heads up that this may be a terrorism related response. It is very sad knowing that 343 firefighters were making their last response.

An example of engine company loyalty that really hit me was reading about one engine company that delayed responding, waiting for their Captain. They learned that their Captain had worked overtime and was already there. The delay saved all their lives. By the time they responded, both towers had fallen.

We should all strive to be able to check off our personal punch lists, all the points outlined by Jason. To do so both honors those who perished on 09-11-2011, as well as fully demonstrating that you did not forget.

God bless our firefighters, families and our country.
