I'm Lt. Michael Wielgat, a Chicago fire fighter since 1988. I invited The HERO Pipe (Highrise Emergency Response Offensive,) a new apparatus specially designed to fight high-rise fires more safely and more effectively than conventional methods. This tool enables fire fighters to battle a blaze from the floor below the fire, keeping them at a safe distance from the fire's most dangerous areas. I wanted to start a discussion to raise concerns and questions about battling high-rise fires.
