The Euclid (Ohio) Fire Department and its mutual aid partners learned valuable lessons after responding to a fire in this seven-story commercial high-rise. On arrival, the fire had blown out five plate glass windows on the right side of the building, and covered 2,500–3,000 square feet of floor space. Photo courtesy Euclid (Ohio) Fire Department

We have one residential (hotel) high rise (5 stories) in our community which was just completed.  It is wood frame construction, full sprinkled, with detection in all areas of the building.  We have done numerous walk-throughs and some pre-planning but informed the owners that should there be significant fire involvement of the structure that our main actions would involve public evacuation before beginning firefighting activities unless we had to do extinguishment to get to the victims.  Our department does not have the manpower to handle a fire in this builing and we have no means of timely mutual aid as we are on an island 30 miles off the coast
