Hello Everyone,

I am currently a college student finishing up my bachelors in firefighter/paramedic. I am in HTR classes for vehicle extrication and rope rescue and hoping to take confined space and trench rescue this spring. I am wondering if I started in a career department how hard it is to join the department's HTR team, as in is are you randomly selected to join or can you apply? I am just curious cause I enjoy HTR work. Thanks in advance,

Ethan

Completely depends upon the dept you are looking to join. Not every dept runs such services, while others may see everyone trained instead of specialized teams. Meanwhile, there are other depts where it can take several years to even get a chance for consideration to such a team. Then there are those depts that are more elite being a FEMA team and so forth which may see deployment overseas etc. So, it really truly varies upon the dept itself, and depends on where you apply.

Most rescue teams or rescue companies require experience and a minimum length of service prior to membership application.

Start with the basics - firefighting and EMT - and get good at them first.

Training is important for rescue firefighters, but experience at handling basic calls under stress is equally important.  So is showing that you can handle the basics prior to attempting more advanced or specialized rescue functions.
