DOWNS, Kan. - A north-central Kansas volunteer firefighter has died after suffering a heart attack while fighting a blaze.

The Hays Daily News reported that Capt. Jim Niles had been responding to a garage fire Thursday afternoon when he was found to be unresponsive.

Kansas State Firefighters Association President Andy Moffitt said Niles was taken over to the Osborne County Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Moffitt said Niles had been in good health. He was an 18-year member of the Downs Volunteer Fire Department..
