WAILUKU, Hawaii - Helicopters and bulldozers were called on to help firefighters battle a brush fire that forced the evacuation of about 100 residents in the Olowalu area of Maui.

Police officers went door to door early Tuesday as shifting winds began to push the flames toward homes, and the Red Cross opened shelters at the Lahaina Civic Center and Maui War Memorial Gym.

Police also closed Honoapiilani Highway from Maalaea to Laniupoko Park for about eight hours before reopening the roadway later Tuesday morning.

There were no reports of injuries or property damage.

Flames covered an estimated 1,100 acres since the fire erupted Monday afternoon near Ukumehame, Maui County spokeswoman Mahina Martin said.

The blaze continued to burn out of control as fire officials reported shifting winds remained a concern, she said.

Twenty-five county firefighters were joined Tuesday by a 15-member state Division of Forestry and Wildlife's fire crew.

Five helicopters assisted firefighters with water drops as an equal number of bulldozers created fire breaks along the highway in areas surrounding the Olowalu residential area.

The cause of the fire was under investigation.
