Glory Seekers
like most of you I don't do this for the glory, I do it to help a neighbor in need. So when someone sees me in f.d. clothing and calls me a glory seeker it really bothers me. Yes it is nice to be
recognized once and awhile for the hundreds of things we do a year but thats not why I do it. I was wondering how you deal with people like that and if there are people on your depts. who do it for the glory???

Exhibit A: I am wearing (at home of course) a tee shirt I got in Oahu, Hawaii from my brothers with Honolulu FD.
Ok... so maybe, sometimes I wear a fire shirt. But never at home on my ground turf, ok so maybe... I might wear one around the house... As I mentioned earlier, I tend to like to blend into the woodwork instead of advertising that I am a firefighter when out in public and sometimes, some of the people I have served are not the most desirable to be buds with... Low key is good sometimes.
But... when I am out of town, on vacation, or teaching across the county, I have always enjoyed wearing other department shirts. It's a cool way to meet other firefighters and an e-ticket when visiting fire stations. Plus, isn't it always kind of cool to get a new fire department tee shirt? And we all love treats...
So John, wanna trade shirts? :D

I have to agree with Branden and Harold. Just let it go. I hope NOT but maybe some day that person or persons will need a firefighters help.

Well, I guess there are different experiences for everyone. I've never had it over a FD shirt, as I don't have any except an official company one, but yes, like I said in my other post on this thread, I've gotten slack twice that I can remember for being in the military by people who knew me, and once while on duty EMS because my truck was running in a public place and some guy wanted to let me know that I was wasting his fuel and that he paid my salary.
It happens. I'm sure it's not that common, but it happens.

Which could lead into another debate as well about "glory seeking" from a military aspect. Not saying you in particular, but just something to address the wearing of duty military uniforms by military personnel in an unofficial capacity.
While working a Packer game I noticed a couple Army personnel wearing their cammies while at the game. They were not there for a flag honor guard, any halftime dedication or anything else....looked like a couple guys on leave at a game. Point is there is no reason to be wearing a duty uniform in the general public when not on official duty (they were drinking which also means they weren't on duty). Really no other reason to wear their uniform in such a capacity except for perhaps attention.

Ah...I remember back in the day, we were instructed NOT to travel in uniform, civvies only. Seems back then the taxpayers didn't have a lot of appreciation for the military. They had a tendency to spit on you and call you baby killer, nice stuff like that. I'm just saying...

No problem of travelling in uniform (I'm not a fan of wearing a work uniform though for it vs a dress uniform). The issue is wearing a uniform when not on duty or in any official military capacity.

I personally wear alot of FD and EMS shirts that I have aquired from various conventions and brother firefighters from other stations. Do I get the "glory hound" attitude from people, sometimes. I choose to ignore it. I have seen other firefighters/ems people do stuff for the glory andit angers me greatly. I as well s 99.99% of people in emergency services are in it for the real reason for this job, that is to protect and serve the citizens of where ever we serve. You are absolutely right its nice for someone to atleast know that you did your job. Its like I tell other people I don't do it for the pay or the perks or even the glory I do it to make a difference and serve my community and will do it as long as humanly possible. The glory hounds will eventualy get them selves in trouble.

Keep in mind that the t-shirt is also a major form of advertisement for the volunteer departments, all of which are on the lookout for new people all the time, and usually making personal contact with folks is the best way to start the recruiting process.
