DUMAS, Texas — A firefighter fatally burned while fighting a Panhandle wildfire will be laid to rest.
Funeral is scheduled for Monday in Dumas for 49-year-old Elias Macias Jaquez of Cactus, who died Wednesday in a Lubbock hospital 11 days after suffering third-degree burns over 60 percent of his body. Funeral will be at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church with burial in Northlawn Memorial Gardens, both in Dumas.
The Mexican-born meat-packing plant worker had been a Cactus volunteer firefighter for two years and was fatally burned while fighting a fire near Dumas, about 40 miles north of Amarillo.
