INDIANAPOLIS - A massive overnight fire destroyed the Texas Roadhouse Restaurant on Indianapolis’ east side.

The restaurant is located on 16th street and Shadeland Avenue. The fire broke out around 1 a.m. Sunday in the back end of the restaurant possibly the kitchen.

Firefighters said the cold temperatures played a role in trying to get the fire under control.

They said it took about 15 minutes to find an unfrozen hydrant to get water to the fire. “I don't know if the hydrants in this area haven't been used in awhile or if this particular last cold spell froze them all up, or maybe they've been opened, tested and refrozen, I don't know, but it is very difficult when you don't get water, it's our primary source of attack,” said IFD Captain Rita Reith.

One fire fighter was slightly injured. Medics took him to Methodist Hospital with chest pain.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Firefighters said the building is a complete loss, about $4 million in damages. The restaurant owners said they do plan to rebuild, but it could take about 4 to 6 months.

The 135 employees who worked there will be placed in other locations.
