DISTRICT HEIGHTS, Md. (WUSA) - Firefighters rescued four people from a burning apartment along Walker Mill Road on Tuesday. Fire crews say no one was hurt, but there is $300,000 worth of damage.

Mark Brady, Prince George's County Fire & EMS, says the fire broke out after noon, and took 65 firefighters to put out. He says four people were trapped.

"[They] had tried to escape through the interior stairwell, but it was charged with intense heat and thick smoke," Brady said the family instead went the balcony and waited for help.

Brady says six apartments in the building are damaged by fire, smoke, or water.

Trey Woods, 9 years old, said he lives close. He wasn't sure whether his home was affected.

"I'm kinda scared," he said.

Trey's mom, Jemilla Smith, said if they can't go home, they'll stay with friends.

"I was told that every single apartment in our building, the door was kicked open," Smith said.

For now, Trey says he's concerned about the families that lost everything.

"I'm sorry for your house, hope you find a better one," Trey said.

Brady said the apartment complex's management company is working with families to find temporary housing. Fire crews are investigating the cause of the fire.
