INDIANAPOLIS - Fire investigators have determined unattended food on a stove caused a fire that badly damaged a north side townhome.

Fire crews were alerted to the fire in 1700 block of Pemberton Lane at around 12:30 p.m. Tuesday.

It took firefighters about 30 minutes to get the fire under control.

One of the women in the apartment when the fire broke out told fire officials she may have turned on the wrong burner on the stove.

Instead of heating up water for tea she may have heated up grease left on the stove. She was alerted to the fire due to a smoke detector.

She returned to find the fire in the kitchen. She attempted to put the fire out, but was unsuccessful.

Fire officials said one firefighter was slightly injured in the fire.

The townhome sustained $100,000 worth of damage.
