Boca Raton police officer Jimmy Jalil says he and another man who stopped to help tried to break the window. But after nearly a dozen attempts, the 32-year-old Jalil decided to use his gun.
Jalil said Friday on CBS' "Early Show" that he knew the bullet would be able to penetrate the window.
Jalil ordered everyone back and fired two shots into the rear passenger window. The dash-mounted police camera captured Jalil clearing the window of glass, then pulling the woman out.
Authorities say the driver of the car lost control on Interstate 95 on Wednesday night, slamming into a utility pole. The car then burst into flames. The driver was ejected and died.

Holy crap! He really felt the need to fire 2 shots to break a car window? I could make a fortune traveling around the country teaching Cops how to break windows without the use of deadly force!
The ends should not justify the means, but I'm glad it worked out and that no one was injured by the gunfire.
I wanna help, we could make a fortune, maybe even get a sponsorship or something. I cannot believe he actually fired into the car. I understand that the car was on fire and all but thats a big risk he was taking.
What about the fire ext. in his trunk? Why didn't the passing trucks stop and offer their fire ext.? What about the tire iron in his trunk? I don't think anybody took the time to THINK. All public safety personal need to be clam in the chaos
And a fire extinguisher that might last all of 5 seconds? Spot on WP.
It's easy to armchair quarterback this one and think of all the what if's and why not's, but I'd suggest he's done a great job in the circumstances....
I think Russell may have been talking about breaking the window with the fire extinguisher at least I hope he was that may make more sense. I have used a cresent wrench to break windows, and have seen Motorola P-200 radios break windows, so I know that they aren't that difficult unless maybe they were reinforced. I don't think they were but it's not said anywhere. I wonder what they was using the first 12+ times they tried that's what I want to know.
Back to basics, sometimes extingushment or confinement is the best answer to rescue. Slow the fire down to allow the time to complete the rescue. With the number of people there they could have mutli-tasked. Rescue comes first but can be acomplished by taking care of the problem. Try it in training some time. It is amazing how effective a small ABC can be. time to slow down the fire is greatly offset by the time gained. And yes breaking the window with the extn is better than a gun. Lots of what if's and yes armchair qb not to critize but to learn and plant the seed to THINK if this happens to us in the future to one of us. Use every oppurtunity to learn and be open to new ideas.
After you didn't put the fire out - or even "slow the fire down to allow the time to complete the rescue" - with the "small ABC can", and after you didn't break the window with that same "small ABC can, the girl's toast.
