(AP) GAINESVILLE, Fla.
A Jacksonville firefighter is being credited with saving a colleague's life, though not in a fire.

Jim Sparks is donating a kidney to fellow firefighter and best friend, 33-year-old John Hall. The transplant was scheduled for Tuesday at a Gainesville hospital.

In November, Hall was given only three years to live and has been undergoing nightly dialysis. That's when Sparks, a perfect match, offered his kidney. Hall has a degenerative disorder caused by a bout of flu as a child.

The two men work in different fire houses, but are close, even going on family vacations together.

Sparks brushes off the praise, asking only that Hall "buy the next round" to repay him.
