ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - Fire crews battled a two-alarm fire early Wednesday morning that sent several families into the streets. The flames damaged apartment #6 at the Mayflower Apartments on 1st Street North about 3:45am.
At one point, power lines fell, narrowly missing several firefighters. It took only about 20 minutes to bring the fire under control. Water had to be shut off to the complex since a couple of water pipes ruptured by the fire.
There have been no reports of injuries and the fire's cause is under investigation by St. Petersburg Fire and Rescue.
A family of two adults and four children were helped by the American Red Cross.
Damage was extensive to the 2nd floor apartment.
