Five-Alarm Fire Burns Through New Jersey Apartment Building

ORANGE, N.J. - A fast-moving, multi-alarm fire that burned for several hours forced the evacuation of dozens of people at a northern New Jersey apartment complex.

No residents were injured in the blaze at the five-story building in Orange, which broke out shortly before 8 a.m. Sunday and eventually spread to three other buildings. But some firefighters sustained minor injuries while battling the blaze.

Fire departments from several nearby communities helped Orange firefighters battle the five-alarm blaze, but it continued to burn for several hours before being brought under control around 4 p.m. It was still burning as of 6 p.m., and officials said a lack of water pressure hampered their initial efforts to combat the blaze.

Authorities believe the fire began in a top floor unit in the southeast section of the "H" shaped building on Lincoln Avenue, but the cause was not immediately known.

At least 100 people were evacuated, and a temporary shelter was set up in the gymnasium at nearby Orange High School. Officials said there are 96 units total in the four affected buildings, and it wasn't known if any residents would be allowed to return home on Sunday.
