First Day Memories
As a BRAND NEW probie, I love hearing the stuff that other people went through when they started on the job. What are some memories from your very first shift?

being relentlessly picked on. The guys got company shirts and would not let me have one for months. When I went to the silk screener to buy some, they called him and told him to tell me I had to have a note from the chief before he could make me some. (the chief avoided me for a week) then gave me the note. The shirt guy told me he had to destroy the screen and I had to wait a year before he would make another one. For a while I was the only guy that didnt have a company shirt and they took delight in me not having one. When I got pissed about it and was going to quit, I was taken aside and told that they were only messing with me and did it because they liked me very much. The moral I learned was when you belong to a company and "not" messed with...you need to find out why

You never know what will happen next. The first time I was asked to fill an air cylinder off the cascade I began filling very carefully because I knew what would happen if the cylinder failed. One of the guys came up behind me with two short pieces of 2x4. He smacked the boards together as hard as he could and yelled, "BAM!" They had to peel me off the rafters.

I joined my volunteer department on a monday night. At that time I was put on probation and told what I could do and what I would be learning to do. The next morning at 8am we had a two vehicle head on fatality accident at an intersection where several fatalities have taken place. I responded to the firehouse as told, When I arrived by radio our other pumper was needed at the scene and I was told to bring it. That was my first run.

I remeber putting on my uniform for the very first time, loading my gear on the engine and checking out my equipment. I had an immense amount of pride in the job and the journey I was about to embark on, as well as the awesome responsiblity of maintaing the publics trust that so many before may had earned.
It is incumbant on all of us in this vocation to maintain that trust from day one until the day we retire. That is why, in my opinion our job is so well respected. The fact that a complete stranger is willing to hand us their sick baby, and have the confidence in us to do the right thing, each and every time we respond....
Congrats to you for entering an exciting career! Best of luck to you, and remember that we are here to serve the public! It's not about us... It's about them!

On my first shift iwas was going over tools and learning about the pumpers and cleaning the station. We had plans to go get me my turnouts later that day. Our shift starts at 7 and at about 9:30, BAAAAAAAAAAAAA, the buzzer goes off. I started jumping around tryin to figure out what i was supposed to be doing. The other firefighter on shift at my station jumped in the truck, so did I. Our Luitenant came out into the bay, "House fire, 549 lower woodville dr.!" It was an awesome feelin to be responding to a call. You feel so dang important lights and sirens blowing. The senior firefighter told me as he was gearing up to help him stretch out the 250' preconnect as soon as we arrive on scene. We had a duplex with one side fully involved. I was maily fetching tools at this point but at one point my captian had me doin some hose work from the extieror, when no one was inside of course. And that was actually the first time i handled one of the nozzles.

my first call was a garbage truck on fire at a land fill, i remember getting to the station an not knowing what to due an was shaking from the adrenline i couldn't get my gear on fast enough those guy's where all yelling to hurry up an just messing with me, but i'll never forget that day...cause now i'm a senior member an get to mess with the new members now.damn was that fire crappy though
