ESCONDIDO, Calif. - Authorities say one person was killed and two others had to be rescued when fire tore through an Escondido condominium.

Escondido Police Lt. Craig Carter says the blaze was reported early Saturday morning in one unit in a strip of four adjacent condos at the Holiday Gardens complex.

About 30 firefighters responded, rescuing two people before knocking out most of the flames in less than an hour.

Carter says crews discovered a body in a back room of the condo where the fire started. Officials have not yet confirmed the victim's identity.

Two adjoining condominiums were destroyed and two others sustained smoke and water damage.

The cause of the blaze is under investigation.
