A 10-year-old girl is in critical condition after firefighters rescued her from a suspicious house fire in Schenectady.

Firefighters found the girl unconscious in a second-floor bedroom of the home at about 4:30 a.m. Saturday.

She was airlifted to Westchester Medical Center and is being treated for smoke inhalation.

Police say the girl's mother left her alone at the Congress Street house. She has been charged with endangering the welfare of a child.

Police Sgt. Eric Clifford says the fire is being investigated as a possible arson. The girl's mother is not a suspect.
