How hard is it to get hired as a paid Firefighter Paramedic in Virginia? I currently have my NREMT-Paramedic and have worked as a Paramedic mostly in California but also in Las Vegas Nevada for the past 10 years. Currently I'm working with a private ambulance company as a paramedic and volunteering at a fire dept as a firefighter/paramedic in Southern California. I was looking at Prince William County Fire Dept to apply for their next recruit class but wanted to get others opinions on how hard it is to get hired full time in VA as a paid firefighter. Thanks!

Most importantly, do you consider yourself a redneck??? :-)

Just kidding there considering another thread.

Anyways, I was in the Navy with a guy who was a NREMT-B in Colorado and had no problem transferring that over to VA, so he could volunteer with a dept. Fire certs, not really sure.

As for how hard is it to get hired is about the same chance as anywhere else. You take the test and depending how you do, you move on. Same with the physical agility, interview, second interview etc. The question moreso for you is if you could afford the travel costs of back and forth, or are you looking to move before testing?
As long as you have your NREMT-P and IFSAC seal on your fire certs it should be easy for your certs to transfer over.

Here are the two sites you should go to for that information

VA Office of EMS http://www.vdh.state.va.us/OEMS/

VA Dept. of Fire Programs www.vafire.com

As for Prince William I think they are a god department they are still a combination system and have associated growing pains with that but I worked NOVA (Northern Virginia) for 2 years as a fireman and the guys and girls from Prince William were always great to deal with.

You should also look at I belive right now the only other departments that are hiring are Fairfax County, Fairfax City, Loudoun County, and Caroline County, also AP Hill Militray Base FD (located in Caroline County.

As for the hiring process stuff every department is different and no one typically accepts the others stuff so each time you gotta start over.

Good luck and if you have nay other questions give me a hollar.
Along with this, don't limit yourself to one are if looking to get on. Check places like Richmond, Newport News, Norfolk, etc. I believe Norfolk has firemedics, so if you are already a medic, that could be a bonus for you.
Let me get this right, you want to move from California to Virginia? WTF
And why wouldnt he.....Virginia is great....especially if you live in and around Richmond. Im 2 hours from DC, 2 hours from the Mountains, and 2 hours from the beach. Plus all of the history that this area has!

Yea you might have to cash in your beach bum shorts for wrangler jeans but its awesome in "The Old Dominion" I never want to live anywhere else and when I visit other states it makes me never want to leave VA at all!
