I live in Port Orange, FL. I came to this site researching a response to a Letter to the Editor in my local news paper. I'm past being fed up with ignorant civilians bashing the benefits of those who dedicate their lives to serving them. Almost no firefighters make a 6 figure salary in retirement. Virtually no firefighters sit in front of the TV for 20 years. We have a 102% increased risk of testicular cancer with a reported 39% of us dying in less than 10 years after retirement. I'm going to write my letter to the editor in hopes of shining some light on this ignorance.

Sorry if I've bummed anyone out but I need some help. I can't find the statistic on the average length of a firefighters retirement. My union president said it was 6 years but he could not give the source. I would appreciate a sourced quote.

In Brotherhood,

Gary
