I am very curious to hear what everyone thinks about exercising with our turnout gear on. I have a personal opinion on thermal insult and the effects there of on core body temperatures...

My concern is 90% of the fire service is not the "elite" athlete firefighter, so to reduce the line of duty deaths, that impact the MOST of our service, we should be focusing on a combination of things that can directly effect the "masses" like discussing the poor nutritional aspects of our job, (hurry up and eat mentality) or how extremely de-hydrated most of the fire service (paid or volunteer) actually are when called upon to perform work, the thermal insult in which we are exposed to and our core body temperatures being encapsulated with aggressive interior attacks, lack of quality rehab, the lack of quality sleep and the effects thereof on our body over time, and the effects of toxins we are now exposed to.
Not too mention what happens with our bodies response to acute and chronic stress, when the alarm or pagers goes off with our physical, emotional, and metabolic reactions that are also slowly killing us...
Elite training regimes are great for a small group of fit people but that is not the make-up of the US Fire Service. I believe a combination, covering many of the previous concerns would better serve our service.
What would your thoughts be if one of your firefighters dropped in the station gym, doing an elite fitness training session. It would surely be classified as a LODD, but did it need to happen?
Any thoughts, pro or con?
